Edmund Dulac

The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales From the Old French

Retold by A.T. Quiller-Couch

Complete with the RARE Original Publisher’s Box

First Edition

1910

A wonderful example in mock antique leather brown cloth with profuse gilt stamped decoration to the front and spine; and blind stamp decoration to the back board – just as if it were real leather

Condition of the boards is in Near Fine condition with a very slight discolouration to the gilt otherwise a Fine example of the boards

There are 128 numbered pages containing the following fairy tales

1.      The Sleeping Beauty

2.      Blue Beard

3.      Cinderella

4.      Beauty and the Beast

There is a long Preface by Arthur Quiller-Couch at the beginning of the book

All 30 plates are present and in pristine condition.  The plates present with positional page numbers are as follows:

The Sleeping Beauty

1.      And there on a bed the curtains of which were drawn wide, he beheld the loveliest vision he had ever seen (Frontispiece)

2.      All the company returned to the Royal Palace to find a great feast arrayed (p.2)

3.      Her head nodded with spite and old age together, as she bent over the cradle and shook her crutched staff above the head of the pretty babe, who slept on sweetly (p.6)

4.      ‘What are you doing, goody?’ asked the Princess.  ‘I am spinning, pretty one,’ answered the old woman, who did not know who she was (p.8)

5.      But news of it was brought to her by a little dwarf who owned a pair of seven-league boots (p.10)

6.      She touched the Princess’s tutors and the Court professors in the midst of their deep studies (p.14)

7.      They grew until nothing but the tops of the castle towers could be seen (p.16)

8.      The ruddy faces of the Switzers told him that they were no worse than asleep (p.24)

Blue Beard

9.      Or were rowed to the sound of music on the waters of their hosts private canal (p.26)

10.  They overrun the house without loss of time (p.30)

11.  And there, in a row, hung the bodies of seven dead women (p.32)

12.  ‘You shall go in, and take your place among the ladies you saw there!’ (p.34)

13.  The unhappy Fatima cried up to her, ‘Anne, sister Anne, do you see any one coming?’ (p.38)

14.  Then Blue Beard roared out so terribly that he made the whole house tremble (p.40)

15.  They overtook him just as he reached the steps of the main porch (p.42)

Cinderella

16.  She used to creep away to the chimney-corner and seat herself among the cinders (p.46)

17.  They sent for the best hairdresser to arrange their hair (p.48)

18.  And her godmother pointed to the finest of all with her wand (p.50)

19.  She was driven away, beside herself with joy (p.54)

20.  The King’s son led her through the gardens, where the guests drew apart and gazed in wonder at her lovliness (p.56)

21.  Whereupon she instantly desired her partner to lead her to the King and Queen (p.64)

22.  She made her escape as lightly as a deer (p.66)

23.  The Prime Minister was kept very busy during the next few weeks (p.68)

Beauty and the Beast

24.  After she had done her work, would sing and play (p.72)

25.  He had been fasting for more than twenty-four hours, and lost no time falling-to (p.80)

27.  Soon they caught sight of the castle in the distance (p.96)

28.  She found herself face to face with a stately and beautiful lady (p.104)

29.  These no sooner saw Beauty than they began to scream and chatter (p.112)

30.  ‘Oh! What a fright you have given me!’ she murmured (p.120)

The text pages are in Fine condition.  It appears that this book has not been out of its box and read – even the edges of the pages are devoid of any foxing almost unheard of for a book of this age – 98 years old!

The box is worn with reinforced tape to the inside of the lid and with a split (no loss of paper) to one of the corners on the base of the box, and some discolouration.  However, the box is complete, in very sound and firm condition and is present.  It is exceptionally rare to find this box and it is strongly advised that the book and box are acquired when found if at all possible

A hard to find book, with the original box in such Fine condition is simply amazing.  Pure quality
